Mold
For molds to grow and reproduce, they need moisture and a food source (walls, glues, clothes, furniture, leaves,
wood, paper, and soil. Because molds grow by digesting the organic material, they gradually destroy on whatever
they grow. Sometimes, new molds grow on old mold colonies. Mold growth on surfaces can often be seen in the
form of discoloration, frequently green, gray, brown, black or white. If mold is found, it needs to be cleaned up
carefully. The person doing the cleaning needs to wear a mold mask (approximately $40 from the hardware
store) to prevent development of fungal infection in the lungs. If mold is present in small quantities, it can be
cleaned with 1 part bleach to 100 parts water, using gloves to prevent the bleach from injuring hands. If the mold
is extensive, then a company which does not remediate mold infestation needs to be called to test for mold in the
house. Having a different company do the testing for mold, separate from the company which remediates the
mold infestation removes bias. Then, all mold-edible materials which have been wet over 72 hours must be
removed. It would be advised that during the clean up, family members might live in another location until it is
safe to come back to the home. Hepafilters without ionization (or turn the ionizer off), placed in bedrooms and in
the main family room or room of mold infestation, are good to remove mold spores and other allergens. It is good
to remember to either wash the filter regularly or change the filters, whenever allergy, nasal congestion, or when
an asthmatic exacerbation arise.
